Mental health does not exist outside culture.
Our families teach us what emotions mean, when we should ask for help, what strength looks like, how relationships should work, and what subjects should never be discussed.
Culture can influence everything from how distress is expressed to what healing looks like.
Research supports taking cultural context seriously. Randomized research has found promising outcomes from culturally adapted CBT among refugee populations with PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and other trials have demonstrated benefits of culturally adapted approaches in specific trauma populations. Culturally responsive therapy is not about assuming that everyone from a particular culture thinks the same way.
It is about asking rather than assuming.
At Phoenix, we want you to be able to bring your whole self into treatment.
