Trauma is not only something we remember. For many people, trauma also changes how easily the nervous system becomes activated.
That is one reason researchers have become interested in neurofeedback for PTSD.
A randomized controlled study led by Bessel van der Kolk and colleagues examined EEG neurofeedback in adults with chronic PTSD and reported meaningful improvement in PTSD symptoms and affect regulation compared with a waitlist condition. (PubMed)
This does not mean neurofeedback is a cure for PTSD or that everyone responds the same way. It does mean neurofeedback is being seriously investigated as one possible component of trauma treatment.
At Phoenix, we view trauma treatment through both a psychological and nervous-system lens.
